Hattie M. Strong Foundation Grant-Making
Priorities
The Hattie M. Strong Foundation makes charitable grants to 501(c)(3)
charities serving at-risk school-aged children enrolled in public or
public charter schools in the city of Washington. Occasional grants are
also made to organizations serving at-risk children in surrounding
jurisdictions. The Strong Foundation’s current priority is to assist
organizations that provide out-of-school-time (OST) programming
during the after-school hours, Saturdays, and summers. Preference is
given to programs that support, reinforce, and enrich the core academic
objectives of the District of Columbia Public Schools, as well as
character development, community service, good citizenship, and
appreciation of the performing and visual arts.
The Strong Foundation no longer accepts unsolicited requests for grants.
This decision makes it possible for the Foundation to direct more money
to the community while reducing the burden on local charities. That
said, the Foundation is always happy to receive information, such as
newsletters and other materials, describing the work of local charities
that provide OST programming.
Grants range from $5,000 to $25,000 and are made throughout the
Foundation’s fiscal year which runs September 1 to August 31.
Organizations under consideration for potential grants may be contacted
for additional information by the Foundation. In some cases, the
Foundation may ask to schedule a site visit.
